FACT CHECK: Rove and McConnell-backed special interest group still trying to hide problems with the disastrous McConnell tax plan

A new ad from a far-right special interest group twists Joe Donnelly’s vote against the McConnell tax plan despite Joe’s history of trying to ensure that our tax code protects working families and their health care.

The latest ad from One Nation claims that the McConnell tax plan will help the middle class – but it ignores the fact that many Hoosiers’ tax breaks will be more than wiped out by rising health care costs, while the insurance companies charging those premiums will receive billions of dollars in new tax breaks. In April, the Congressional Budget Office reported that monthly health care bills were set to rise by as much as 34% this year on the individual marketplaces. It placed much of the blame on the McConnell tax plan, which will cause 13 million people to go without health insurance within the next decade.

The McConnell tax plan also skyrockets the deficit and will add as much as $2.2 trillion to the national debt. To pay for it, McConnell, Paul Ryan, and their GOP allies in Washington have already begun discussing efforts to cut Hoosiers’ Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security in order to make up the difference.

Joe Donnelly has continuously worked for a better tax code that seeks to help working Hoosiers and small businesses instead of raising their taxes and boosting the cost of their health care. He voted to make the Bush tax cuts permanent for the vast majority of Americans. His End Outsourcing Act, which he has discussed numerous times with President Trump, would create tax incentives for companies that relocate foreign jobs to low-income and rural communities in the U.S.

“The verdict is in, and no matter how much money Mitch McConnell’s allies spend, Hoosiers know the McConnell tax plan is wrong for them,” said Will Baskin-Gerwitz, Communications Director for Joe for Indiana. “They won’t forgive the GOP for causing their health care bills to skyrocket while millions more Americans go without coverage, and they certainly won’t forgive them using this bill as an excuse to gut their Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Joe’s looking forward to working with both parties to build a tax code that works for everyone next year when he’s re-elected to the Senate.”
